On June 6, 2021, in London, Ontario, a 20-year old male named Nathaniel Veltman struck members of the Afzaal family with his pickup truck while they were out for an evening walk. Four family members died- the parents, grandmother, and eldest daughter- leaving the fifth family member, 9-year old Fayez Afzaal, hospitalized with several injuries.
Local police have stated that the incident was premeditated and that the family was targeted for their Islamic faith. Nathaniel Veltman has been arrested by the police and faces four counts of first-degree murder and a single count for attempted murder. Attorneys at the federal and provincial levels have allegedly received consent to pursue terrorism charges under section 83 of the Criminal Code. The criminal charges have yet to be proven in court, and a publication ban has been placed over the proceedings to prevent any influence or leakage of information.
Many politicians have addressed the accident. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the killings a “terrorist attack”. Various party leaders such as Erin O’Toole and Elizabeth May gave speeches that mourned the lives lost, condemned the attack, and called for a change in the Canadian community.
